Health and social care

Information for child support organisations

and health care workers

Yebo is a young organisation founded in August 2008 and aims to provide a network of support for children who are emotionally and socially disadvantaged in the UK Uganda and South Africa.

Our UK based projects involve primate days for children, aimed at allowing children and young people to relate their feelings, emotions, behaviour  and family situations to that of primates through communication and primate-based activities.

Yebo will provide these primate days free of charge to child support organisations that meet our criteria. We will also be visiting conservation primate organisations where children will be able to be able to observe the behaviour of primates.  These allow children to come into contact by viewing primates as well as learning about them through communication primate-based activities. Please see more details on the day below.

Other projects include a primate feelings book,  being published to bring awareness to children’s charities in the UK and primate conservation organisations.  Children are being asked to contribute Creative pieces of work with a primate theme relating to their experiences and feelings in life.

How does illness and death in the family affect your life?

Caring for a seriously ill family member can place a serious strain on all members of the family. Research has shown that this can have serious emotional and behavioural affects on children and young people.  These may bring up feelings of guilt, anger, confusion, attention seeking, loss of trust, a difficulty in sustaining and building social relationships, lack of confidence, feelings of hurt and disbelief, difficulty in socialising with the view that they are ‘different’ from their friends who are unable to talk about or understand the problems they are facing.

How does abuse impact on peoples lives?

Abuse can mean a lot of different things such as neglect, emotional, physical or sexual abuse. Bullying and domestic violence are also forms of child abuse. Abuse can affect people in different ways and can cause problems for them that can transfer into later life.  Some of these problems may cause feelings of being Isolated and afraid, becoming insecure, clingy, and withdrawn.  It can cause severe anxiety, panic attacks and depression, an extreme fear of any new situation and an over reaction to criticism with an idea of trying to be perfect in everything they do. A lack of trust for people, extreme passivity or aggression and a difficulty in building and sustaining social relationships.
Yebo have acknowledged these issues by creating activities to allow feelings to be expressed in a safe and confidential environment through the use of Art, drama and music therapy with a focus on animal assisted therapy.

Animal Assisted Therapy projects

Yebo aims to facilitate projects for young people and children with emotional and social disadvantages from the UK to travel abroad to South Africa, Kenya and Uganda enabling them to work one to one with wildlife and animals at projects as an animal assisted therapy project, understanding the affects of conservation issues and being directly involved in the care of the wildlife at the sanctuaries.  This aims to provide the young people with benefits such as;

•    Building self confidence,
•     Aiding communication,
•    Having a focus and a purpose in society,
•     The ability to give and build relationships with others by learning how to communicate with animals,
•     Increasing motivation, enthusiasm and the ability to share experiences,
•    The opportunity for fun and relaxation,
•     The opportunity to help others and turn their negative energy into positive energy.
