This activity was used in the animal assisted therapy talks.<\/p>\n<p>Peace Nakitto from Uganda, flew over to the UK, specifically for the training weekend to speak to volunteers about the culture in Uganda and South Africa.\u00a0 This is something we find is an important part of the volunteering experience in the Yebo projects\u00a0 as the activities and support may be used in a different way abroad. Peace also helps our project when we are in Uganda.<\/p>\n<p>Veronica Etherington is a play therapist who works for CHASE hospice care for children.\u00a0 She also works with Heather Tilley <img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-1555\" style=\"margin: 10px;\" title=\"Making flip flops from garbage!\" src=\"http:\/\/www.yeboyes.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/06\/img_2014-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"Making flip flops from garbage!\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.yeboyes.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/06\/img_2014-300x225.jpg 300w, http:\/\/www.yeboyes.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/06\/img_2014-1024x768.jpg 1024w, http:\/\/www.yeboyes.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/06\/img_2014.jpg 1600w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/>who is a family and bereavement counselor and Fiona Armitage who is an occupational therapist.\u00a0 Fiona works with many children with disabilities and spoke a lot about the communication when working in this environment.<\/p>\n<p>Staff members from Nordoff Robins kindly spoke to us about Music therapy.\u00a0 Alasdair Davies works at London zoo and also travels abroad to conserve primates.\u00a0 Alasdair spoke to the group about primate conservation.<\/p>\n<p>Hayley Green works for the Surrey child protection team and spoke to the group about child abuse in the UK and Africa.<\/p>\n<p>Below, Sylvian Timberly, a student at Bradford University writes about <img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-1557\" title=\"The finished flip flop!\" src=\"http:\/\/www.yeboyes.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/06\/img_2018-225x300.jpg\" alt=\"The finished flip flop!\" width=\"225\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.yeboyes.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/06\/img_2018-225x300.jpg 225w, http:\/\/www.yeboyes.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/06\/img_2018-768x1024.jpg 768w, http:\/\/www.yeboyes.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/06\/img_2018.jpg 1200w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 225px) 100vw, 225px\" \/>her experience of the day.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;SERENDIPITY<br \/>\nDefinition<br \/>\nThe faculty of making fortunate discoveries by accident.<br \/>\n&#8212;&#8212;-<br \/>\nThe experience was truly so\u2026.\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 I found that\u00a0 each presenter used<br \/>\nindividualistic techniques to effect.\u00a0 \u00a0However, the most memorable<br \/>\ntopic for me was introduced by Peace concerning her homeland, Uganda.<br \/>\nHer presentation encouraged me to make a decision to join the group<br \/>\nvisit in July.<\/p>\n<p>All lectures were interestingly presented to ensure audience attention<br \/>\nand the participatory\u00a0 factor ensured that participants\u00a0 did not nod<br \/>\noff due to the effects of\u00a0 the early start and warm atmosphere.<br \/>\nFor myself, there was particular interest in analysis of presentation<br \/>\ntechniques as these are useful in my own\u00a0 developmental programme.<br \/>\nThe talks by Lisa and Alistair on primate behavior and conservation<br \/>\nwere enlightening regarding chimpanzee emotional reactions to events in<br \/>\ntheir lives.\u00a0 \u00a0 Particular reference was made to Jennie and the<br \/>\ntraumatic\u00a0 responses to her terrible treatment in the name of science.<br \/>\nThese talks had me hunting for relevant academic papers on the<br \/>\nUniversity site, thus indicating that all the imparted knowledge<br \/>\nremained with me.<\/p>\n<p>So, I now come full circle to serendipitous experiences after not quite<br \/>\nknowing what to expect beforehand but thus\u00a0 resulting in one of the<br \/>\nbest experiences of a lifetime \u2013 so happy I joined.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-1560\" title=\"Getting involved with team work\" src=\"http:\/\/www.yeboyes.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/06\/img_1997-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"Getting involved with team work\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.yeboyes.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/06\/img_1997-300x225.jpg 300w, http:\/\/www.yeboyes.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/06\/img_1997-1024x768.jpg 1024w, http:\/\/www.yeboyes.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/06\/img_1997.jpg 1600w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>We were grateful for all who attended the days, and we enjoyed speaking and meeting all the volunteers over the weekend.<\/p>\n<p>For more information on attending future training days, please email info@yeboyes.org<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Read all about the Yebo training weekend on the 29th and 30th May, and get into the spirit by watching a video on the weekend.
