Pre included observations made in their first trip and post was at the return<\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Garamond,serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"> trip at the facility.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 0cm;\"><span style=\"font-family: Garamond,serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><strong>Beneficiaries<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 0cm;\"><span style=\"font-family: Garamond,serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">The first trip comprised of 35 children and the second had 42 children including two facilitators that escorted the group.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 0cm;\"><span style=\"font-family: Garamond,serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><strong>Activities<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 0cm;\"><span style=\"font-family: Garamond,serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">The children engaged in different activities which included; community work, a guided tour around the zoo (UWEC), life skills <\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Garamond,serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-2588\" style=\"margin: 10px;\" title=\"seeing the animals\" src=\"http:\/\/www.yeboyes.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/12\/0231-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"seeing the animals\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.yeboyes.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/12\/0231-300x225.jpg 300w, http:\/\/www.yeboyes.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/12\/0231-1024x768.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Garamond,serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">exposure, music dance and drama, lunch and refreshments. In undertaking these activities, chimpanzees were used as ambassadors to speak for other <\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Garamond,serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">animals that have had similar circumstances in their lives.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 0cm;\"><span style=\"font-family: Garamond,serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><strong>Key Learning<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 0cm;\"><span style=\"font-family: Garamond,serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">From the observation and interactions with the street children, the following key learning\u2019s were drawn;<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 0cm;\"><span style=\"font-family: Garamond,serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">The \tchildren willingly undertook community work and through this they \tlearnt how to be responsible and live in a clean environment. They \twere asked if they had any problem with tiding up where they live or \tit\u2019s something that they did not like to do in their everyday \tlife.<\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Garamond,serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-2595\" style=\"margin: 10px;\" title=\"Learning\" src=\"http:\/\/www.yeboyes.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/12\/032-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"Learning\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.yeboyes.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/12\/032-300x225.jpg 300w, http:\/\/www.yeboyes.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/12\/032-1024x768.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"margin-left: 1.27cm; margin-bottom: 0cm;\">\n<p style=\"margin-left: 1.27cm; margin-bottom: 0cm;\"><span style=\"font-family: Garamond,serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">Their responses indicated that it was very important in avoiding disease spread that would affect them since they have no money and have to be healthy so as to get energy for every day. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-left: 1.27cm; margin-bottom: 0cm;\">\n<p style=\"margin-left: 1.27cm; margin-bottom: 0cm;\"><span style=\"font-family: Garamond,serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">It\u2019s therefore important to note that street children can play a role in cleaning up the towns or areas they live if mobilized.<\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Garamond,serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-2599\" style=\"margin: 10px;\" title=\"Looking after their environment\" src=\"http:\/\/www.yeboyes.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/12\/036-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"Looking after their environment\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.yeboyes.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/12\/036-300x225.jpg 300w, http:\/\/www.yeboyes.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/12\/036-1024x768.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 0cm;\"><span style=\"font-family: Garamond,serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">They \talso learnt how be co-operative and work together as a group and \twith different people in the communities they live in, unlike their \tfirst visit in which they did not do any community work. It was observed \tthat the children were mu<\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Garamond,serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">ch r<\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Garamond,serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">elaxed on the second visit and paid more \tattention to the facilitators.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"margin-left: 1.27cm; margin-bottom: 0cm;\">\n<p style=\"margin-left: 1.27cm; margin-bottom: 0cm;\"><span style=\"font-family: Garamond,serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">This led us to the conclusion that a one off visit may not easily influence behavior and <\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Garamond,serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">action among the street children. This is on ground that the children were very <\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Garamond,serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">skeptical on the first visit, but slowly learnt to trust their facilitators. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 0cm;\"><span style=\"font-family: Garamond,serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">Through \tanother guided tour the children learnt more about animals and this \ttime they were more inquisitive in learning about anything that they \twere being taught which was not in the same case during their first \tvisit, where they did not feel confident\u00a0 to ask questions or want to know more about \tthe animals that they saw and liked. They expressed their key \tlearning on animals through pictures, stories, and questions<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 0cm;\"><span style=\"font-family: Garamond,serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">During the second visit, the children asked more questions like, <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 0cm;\"><span style=\"font-family: Garamond,serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">What \tis the relation ship between chimpanzees and humans?<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 0cm;\"><span style=\"font-family: Garamond,serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">At \twhat age do snakes give birth?<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 0cm;\"><span style=\"font-family: Garamond,serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">Why \tdo tortoises survive for a long time?<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 0cm;\"><span style=\"font-family: Garamond,serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">Do \tyou always take back these animals to the wild?<\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Garamond,serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-2606\" style=\"margin: 10px;\" title=\"Enjoying their time away from the streets\" src=\"http:\/\/www.yeboyes.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/12\/038-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"Enjoying their time away from the streets\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.yeboyes.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/12\/038-300x225.jpg 300w, http:\/\/www.yeboyes.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/12\/038-1024x768.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 0cm;\"><span style=\"font-family: Garamond,serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">This is evident that they had developed a passion for animals and they no longer just have a concern about their own plight, but the environment that <\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Garamond,serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">surrounds them, unlike in the first visit.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 0cm;\"><span style=\"font-family: Garamond,serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">When asked to tell tales about animals, this time they had more stories to tell with out any hesitation for example how people came from chimpanzees, why the eagle eats the hens\u2019 chicks, how the hare tricked the leopard, why the giraffe developed a long neck among others, and also were able to derive meanings and lessons from these stories of which they later related to their daily lives and learnt from them, unlike in their first visit where they told stories but could not derive any meaning out of them.<\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Garamond,serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-2612\" style=\"margin: 10px;\" title=\"enjoying good food, away from the streets\" src=\"http:\/\/www.yeboyes.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/12\/0741-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"enjoying good food, away from the streets\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.yeboyes.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/12\/0741-300x225.jpg 300w, http:\/\/www.yeboyes.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/12\/0741-1024x768.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 0cm;\"><span style=\"font-family: Garamond,serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">The \tchildren mentioned some actions they would undertake to protect \tanimals and their habitat. They mentioned; feeding, not killing, \ttaking time to learn about animals and planting trees.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 0cm;\"><span style=\"font-family: Garamond,serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">They were also concerned about the wild animals that are eaten by the carnivorous animals and humans as well and asked Uganda wildlife education Center to encourage people become vegetarians.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 0cm;\"><span style=\"font-family: Garamond,serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-2616\" style=\"margin: 10px;\" title=\"relaxing in good healthy surroundings\" src=\"http:\/\/www.yeboyes.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/12\/081-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"relaxing in good healthy surroundings\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.yeboyes.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/12\/081-300x225.jpg 300w, http:\/\/www.yeboyes.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/12\/081-1024x768.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Garamond,serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">They \talso named polythene and plastic as an environmental problem and \tadvocated for picking all polythene bags and plastics that are \tlittered. They demonstrated this through a community service \tactivity at UWEC where they collected all polythene.  They suggested \treusing the polythene to; light their stoves back at home, unlike in \tthe first visit where they discarded the sweets and biscuit wrappers \tafter eating. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 0cm;\"><span style=\"font-family: Garamond,serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">Keeping \tfood, constructing huts. This was contrary to the first visit where \tpoor waste disposal was evident. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 0cm;\"><span style=\"font-family: Garamond,serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">When \tasked to draw animals they liked and why they liked them this was done on this particular visit where they used their skills and creativity more, unlike in \tthe first visit most of them did not want to draw and others did not \tknow how to draw the animals they liked and tell why they liked \tthem, they simply drew images which did not portray the real animals \tthey had seen. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 0cm;\"><span style=\"font-family: Garamond,serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><strong>Conclusion<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 0cm;\"><span style=\"font-family: Garamond,serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">Sustained programs with street kids can lead to behavior change and action among street kids if properly managed.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 0cm;\">\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 0cm;\"><span style=\"font-family: Garamond,serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">You can help support these programs which we aim to run each month. 2 days a month costs Yebo \u00a3400.
